Crank Magnets

Like an attractive woman walking through a building site, or an old man passing by a duckpond eating a cheese sandwich, so pastors have the uncanny ability of attracting unwelcome attention. Indeed, they are magnets for cranks and crackpots.

For the third time now, a ‘prophet’ has shared with me the benefit of his hotline to heaven. Here’s a taste, which I quote verbatim:

‘God was wanting church (sic) cleansed to be able for Holy Spirit to come and because of what God has seen then I again must warn because God is wanting England to be prayed for and in repentance, but Church has not listened to this word and so I give God (sic) .Amen. We touch not the glory of God Amen.

Unfortunately for me, that is only one paragraph of a document comprising seventy-three A4 pages.

I do not in the slightest think that it is inspired by Satan; the Prince of Darkness would have done a better job. I do believe in the genuine prophetic word, wherein God calls to mind a particular thought that His people might be encouraged or rebuked. We should, however, think very, very carefully before presuming to speak on His behalf. This makes me the more indignant when a self-appointed or false prophet demands to be heard.
