Paythorne Methodist Church

This afternoon I paid a visit to Paythorne Methodist Chapel in between our own services. It was the church's 187th anniversary and there was a good turn out. Paythorne is more like a hamlet than a village, though it boasts a popular pub and caravan site. It's 'round the back' of Gisburn and is a place from which my forbears came. I'd like to think that some of them may have responded to the gospel's dulcet tones in this place.

The building is not unlike Salem, with pews ascending a series of steps, resembling a lecture theatre somewhat. Perhaps Salem inspired this design, though it's not one that a modern church architect would employ.

The top rear window offers a pleasing view of Pendle to those needing respite during a sermon.
