Alford Church: Stairs to Nowhere

At Alford’s Parish Church in Lincolnshire is an old staircase that literally disappears into nothing. Built by some former generation for who-knows-what (a rood?), it was deemed unnecessary by their successors who filled it in but did not bother to remove the bottom steps.

In the Bible, the Christian is reminded of Jacob’s ladder or staircase to heaven which is a picture of Christ Jesus, the way to God the Father. Only through Him to we obtain heaven and approach God. Other religions might offer stairs, but like Alford’s, they lead nowhere. You might climb them with enthusiam and sincere devotion; you might even be made breathless by the ascent, but you still end up nowhere.
