6 and 12 pounder gun batteries are still to be found on the Orkney coast neat Stromness, guarding Scapa Flow, which sheltered the Grand Fleet in the Great War, as well as a British Fleet in the Second. German raids took place, sometimes successfully, but overall, our naval strength was preserved in these northern bays and harbours. As I inspected some of the positions last week, I silently gave thanks for their ultimate success.

If Hitler’s forces had indeed conquered these islands, gospel truth would have been trampled beneath the Gestapo’s iron soled boots. In previous generations, Napoleon Bonaparte’s godless legions and Philip Habsburg’s Inquisition-bearing Armada would have had the same effect. Although contemporary Britain is godless and in need of re-evangelisation, God providentially used our surrounding seas to preserve spiritual light from those who would extinguish it.
