New Year Truth

When the former Albanian dictator Enver Hoxha delivered his New Year message back in 1967, he said:

“This year will be harder than last year. It will, however, be easier than next year.”

A politician speaking the truth: a rare pleasure. Are we Christians entitled to ask God for a good year? A year of prosperity, health and happiness? I think not. A pregnant mother may not ask that she be spared the pangs of childbirth - it is part and parcel of motherhood. A Christian may not demand that he never be persecuted or mocked - it is part of the job description. So what may we ask of the Lord for this new year if not for personal comfort, luxurious living and pain-free pleasures?

You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 3:17-18, New King James Version

Pray to grow.
