Seven Swans

Seven swans a-swimming is thought to refer to the seven sacraments of the Roman Catholic Church: baptism, confirmation, the mass, confession, marriage, ordination, and last rites. I consider these to be nonsense on stilts; only two ceremonies are prescribed by the New Testament- baptism and communion and they are but symbols. People who believe in sacraments generally obsess over what they have done, what ceremonies performed, what levels of piety reached. Away with sacraments and the self-righteousness they breed: behold instead the Lord Jesus and all He did. Believe by faith that His merits alone are yours, and saved you are!

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God. Ephesians 2:8
