No Night There

What is remarkable about these photographs, taken by a friend of mine who has a property in Shetland?

If you supposed they were taken late at night, you would be correct. Snapped close to midnight, these photos show how bright is the night sky in the far north. On 21st June, Shetland received no night. In this respect, it reminds me of New Jerusalem, in which there ‘will be no night there’ (Rev 21:5). Unfortunately, Shetlanders pay for this summer brightness with black-out blinds, while suffering the darkest of winters, in which a very brief 'dawn' is enjoyed at midday on 21st December, with little light beside.

Night-time is occasion for tiredness, debauchery, crime and ignorance. Yet the days are coming when John’s words shall be fulfilled:

There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever. Revelation 22:5
