Saint Distraction, Burnley

Saint Catherine's in Burnley is an Anglo-Catholic parish church. Although it is highly active unlike some, with at least ten ‘masses’ said every week (and on each day of the week), it is not somewhere I could myself worship. Its building, seen from the front, appears complicated and pernickety, much like the rituals performed within. Nevertheless, in these days of aggressive secularism, the lengthening shadows of the minaret and cancerous liberalism within the state church, I become more reticent to criticise those whose worship is not to my taste but whose fundamental doctrine might still be biblical. The building’s design is too complicated but it still serves its purpose; the affairs within might be too intricate and allow too many distractions, but it might still be used by the Lord in these dark, godless times.

But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in Spirit and Truth: for the Father requireth even such to worship him. God is a Spirit, and they that worship him, must worship him in Spirit and Truth. John 4:23-24 1599 Geneva Bible
