Sarum Cathedral

It is unusual to stand on a spot which was once occupied by a cathedral but is now entirely vacant. The old Norman cathedral at Sarum in Wiltshire was replaced by Salisbury in the 1200s and is now just a set of peculiar foundations and enigmatic shapes.

There are many countries around the world where the Church once prospered but has since been extinguished. Turkey, for instance, which is now just a few dusty foundations upon which myriad minarets are built. Similarly, Britain’s Christian heritage is crumbling and decaying; soon, just a few metaphorical foundations will be visible: mosques and temples with ‘Wesleyan’ still written upon them; carpet showrooms with peculiar spires; large, private homes with gothic window tracery described by estate agents as 'features'.

Buildings come and go, but the Church of Jesus Christ will survive until the very hour He comes for her.
