Stone of Free Speech

Upon Hampstead Heath is a monument which is as vital to our nation as it is unimpressive in its construction. It is the Stone of Free Speech and it stands almost halfway up Parliament Hill. Ironically, it used to have an inscription upon it, which was removed, which invited public gatherings and religious worship to be held in its vicinity. Despite its disappointing appearance, it is one of the few monuments to have its own dedicated website, which claims:

“For hundreds of years, Britons have gathered at this stone when their freedoms under threat. That time has come again.”

I am inclined to agree. Anyone who dares speak out against the new sexual morality and the aggressive transgender ideology risks social disdain at best and criminal prosecution at worst. For a century, we Christians have witnessed our God and Saviour being routinely blasphemed and ridiculed, while knowing we still have the freedom to criticise false religion and proclaim the true. Now, this unimpressive stone with its own message muffled, is a reminder of what we have enjoyed so long and may truly miss when it is finally taken away.

“Declare among the nations, Proclaim, and set up a standard; Proclaim—do not conceal it— Say, ‘Babylon is taken, Bel is shamed. Merodach is broken in pieces; Her idols are humiliated, her images are broken in pieces.’" Jeremiah 50:2, NKJV
