Walking with Joseph Alleine

Joseph Alleine was my companion last week. Yet another brave man of God who would sooner lose his home and income rather than conform to a state church more concerned with political uniformity than gospel truth. Although a gentle, well-respected man, he spent some time in prison.

I would share with you his Containing the Voice of the Herald, Before the Great King; The Voice of God Speaking From Mount Gerizim; Being a Short View of the Promises of the Gospel. I’ll shorten it to God Speaking from Mount Gerazim. If you wish to be reminded of the many and great promises God bestowed upon the believer, and which He delights to honour, listen to this. Clearly, the colonial accent which reads his words is not Alleine’s, but the meaning is wondrous. I have listened to this now four times, and have been much blessed.

Quotes:

O miserable man, what a deformed monster has sin made you! God made you "little lower than the angels"; sin has made you little better than the devils.

Conversion is not a repairing of the old building, but it takes all down and erects a new structure. It is not the sewing on a patch of holiness; but, with the true convert, holiness is woven into all his powers, principles and practice.

There is no surer evidence of an unconverted state than to have the things of the world uppermost in our aim, love, and estimation.
