World's Greatest City

For the tenth year in a row, London has beaten the likes of New York, Washington, Beijing and Paris to be declared the world’s greatest city. Crowned as the single most powerful and magnetic metropolis in the world by the Global Power City Index, the claim comes as a blow to those who thought and hoped that a post-imperial, post-Brexit Britain would be relegated to the status of banana republic.

I hope to visit our capital this summer. Yet while there, the filth, the crime and the absence of community cohesion will be only too apparent. Upon my return I shall be grateful for two things in particular: the rural nature of our country chapel and the placemat waiting for me at that much, much greater city- New Jerusalem:

Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God.
