All Saints' Church, Gainsborough

All Saints’ Church in Gainsborough was closing when I called; some kind of café had been operating and the volunteer(s) was keen to lock up and be gone, not admitting the curious late. This is a pity, for I have a fondness for Georgian interiors, even when attached to late medieval towers. The rest of the previous edifice was dismantled and replaced back in 1730 when it was deemed 'too dark and mean and incommodious' for the growing town's population and aspiration. One certainly could not apply those adjectives to the current building, even if incongruity surrounds its tower.
Darkness, meanness and incommodiousness are not fit terms to describe our church buildings, though some fellowships can only afford such, though over our personal lives we have greater control. The light of God’s word, the generosity of the Spirit’s fruit and the comfort of His sanctifying presence should characterise our living and our lifestyles.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Matthew 5:16
