America's Birthday & The Great King's Coming

An American member of our church attended yesterday’s Men’s Breakfast wearing a Stars & Stripes-themed shirt superimposed with a bald eagle motif. It was, of course, the fourth of July, that date when United States of Americans celebrate their independence from Mother England. This year is more poignant than ever, it being the 250th anniversary. Apart from the War of 1812 when British soldiers burnt down the White House (but not before eating the President’s breakfast and enjoying his drinks), our nations have mainly been friends and allies.

As a United Empire Loyalist, I should have preferred the Americans to have remained within the imperial family, much like Australia and Canada. Nevertheless, few would agree with Lord North that it was a mistake and that it would not survive. The USA has been a phenomenally successful nation, economically, technologically, militarily and spiritually. Nevertheless, countries wax and wane, empires rise and fall. If Great Britain topped the table in 1900, America did so in 2000, but the highest place is only held temporarily; other nations are queueing and jostling for their time in the sun.

A more successful enterprise than even the American War of Independence commenced at Pentecost and will conclude when King Jesus returns to earth, when He establishes His visible dominion. No more parliaments, congresses, coronations or swearings-in, for this King is coming to stay and shall never retire, die, or suffer defeat.

Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. Ps 2:10
