Bible Weak
It was pleasing to have folk from other churches come and support our Bible event last week: Harrop Chapel, Chipping Chapel, St Leonard’s in Padiham, the Inghamite church and some from further afield, such as Bradford, Bournemouth, Leeds, Bourne and Knot End.
There are many who attempt to diagnose the weakness of the British church. It’s too this, or it’s too that; it over-emphasises x or under-emphases y. Here is my own two penn'orth for this perennially relevant problem for which serious and urgent remedy is required: British Christianity suffers from a lack of hunger for God’s word. Several sufferers of cancer whom I know, or have known, were first alerted to their malady because they stopped desiring food. The contents of their plates were half left and what little they nibbled gave them little satisfaction. When Bible study no longer excites you, or when a good sermon and scriptural exposition is of less interest to you than soothing music, or pseudo-prophetic jibber-jabber, or general social interaction, then you are spiritually weak and feeble, no matter what your reputation or position in the church. To stop loving God’s word is to stop loving God Himself.
