Blue Peter and the Increase of Knowledge

In October 1976, Blue Peter ran a piece of the mobile telephone. Its presenters, with their plummy voices, even conduct an experiment to convince their sceptical viewers that telephones can indeed operate without wires. Forty years later, and most of us have mobiles which are far more powerful than any computer back then.

In April 2017, I started sharing my photograps with Google Maps. This means that when you search for a certain place, my photographs may well appear on your screen. Some of the ones I took in Jerusalem have had over 10,000 views. The total number of views is 850k; my pictures are viewed 5000 times every 24 hours. I derive some pleasure from this, I must confess.

So what? You can see pictures from all around the world in a little box you carry in your pocket, any time or place. You can communicate instantly with anyone else around the world. You type a few words into that box, and the sum of human knowledge is at your fingertips.

But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased. Daniel 12:4

Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth? Luke 18:8

Our knowledge of ourselves is now huge; our knowledge of the gospel is poorer that it was 400 years ago. Surely, these are signs of the times.
