Chatburn Church

Last night, Joyful Noise was held at Chatburn Parish Church. This was the first Anglican place of worship to be consecrated during Victoria's reign. Unlike many churches, it retained its gallery, in which the village orchestra probably sat to accompany worship before the reintroduction of organs. By the 1840s, the Church of England was re-catholicising, and the replacing of village minstrels with organs was a part of that process.
