Garnet

This small piece of garnet likely corresponds with what the AV Bible calls a carbuncle. The word comes from the Latin carbunculus, and means ‘little coal’ or 'small, glowing ember', suggesting a rich red colour, so it may also refer to the ruby and the spinel. Strictly speaking, it ought to have been properly cut to be called a garnet, whereas my specimen is ‘raw’ and natural, remaining in its carbuncular state. Yet even now, as I balanced it atop my laptop and allowed the rays of my desk lamp to pass through, its beauty is evident.
In the unlikely event that I become a lapidarist or jeweller, this little piece of rock would be broken, reduced and polished, which would much increase its value. So the Lord reduces us, cuts us, breaks us and rubs us, that we might shine the greater and reflect better His glory. Marvel not at the pain through which you go; the Lord is transforming you from a carbuncle into something even better than a garnet.
And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels. Malachi 3:17a
