Jaguar of Judah

I went to see an old school friend the other week. We have maintained our friendship since the mid-nineties, but it was not really he nor his family I had intended to see. It was his car. He has bought himself a Jaguar, the type of car I have always admired and desired. For the first time, I was able to sit inside and absorb the ambience, admire the interior trim and luxurious dash. I imagined myself driving so fine a machine.

In truth, the acquisition of such a car is often better than the actual owning; the act of collecting, buying and procuring is often more pleasurable than the possession. Just as small children, anticipating Christmas or birthdays, often find greater thrills in the run-up than from the day itself, so owning a fine car would prove less enjoyable than I probably imagine. Whatever we seek to own usually disappoints. Only possessing Christ Himself will break this mould. Having kept His company for ten millennia, we shall find Him all the more fascinating and mesmerising, not less.

In that day the Branch of the Lord shall be beautiful and glorious;

And the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and appealing

For those of Israel who have escaped.
