Lessons from the Rainbow 1

I walked to chapel yesterday morning. My car is in a poor state of repair and I have little diesel; the forecast promised sunshine, so on went the boots and off I walked. I got so wet I called one of our deacons to see if he’d take me the rest of the way. Still, I was delighted by the rainbows I saw. There might have been five or six, though they were likely the same one. Sometimes I saw the full bow, other times just a half. On one occasion, there was a double bow (above: the upper bow may be faintly detected).

We know the rainbow is a reminder of God’s covenant with Noah. The promises of God prove increasingly precious to His people; the more they learn to rely on His word, the greater their sense of security, even when the clouds are dark and angry. Yet it is only around the time of rain that the rainbow is seen. We are not permitted to enjoy one on a gloriously sunny July afternoon, but a wet October morning. Life’s trials and tribulations are the best times to receive God’s grace and support- not in the seasons of peace of plenty.
