Mighty Waves of the Sea

I find myself 441 miles north (or 566 if one is not flying like a crow), between Scotland and Norway, on a series of rocky islands between the Atlantic and the North Sea. Although rather bleak and barren, there is a rugged beauty about them, especially the endless coastline, which the ocean repeatedly assaults and batters. Although my pictures make it look quite calm, the spray from the frothing waters was like rain, and the wind was so strong it made walking rather hard and inhalation difficult. Hail and sunshine took their turns, the combination resulting in several rainbows, reminders of God’s mercy. It was the ferocity of the sea which most fired my interest, however. The Psalms meditate upon the theme of the crashing waves, describing God’s superiority:
The Lord on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of the sea. Psalm 93:4
and His ownership of them:
Which made heaven, and earth, the sea, and all that therein is: which keepeth truth for ever: Psalm 146:6

Like a thunderstorm, the raging seas hint at the awesome power of the Creator. And to think: such a One holds our little lives in His omnipotent hand!

My times are in thy hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me. Psalm 31:15
