St Mary's, Llŷn

Amgueddfa Forwrol Llŷn Maritime Museum in north Wales is housed in the former Anglican church of St Mary, completed in 1827. Local tradition asserts that the first Christian use of this site dates back to the sixth century, a period we call the Dark Ages. This name refers not to the particular ignorance or evil of those times, but our own ignorance about them, for little was recorded and much that had been was lost, often through the monastic burnings of the Viking raids after 793 (though Wales was better preserved from them than the churches of England). Far from being a period of darkness and ignorance, the early medieval Welsh likely had a greater knowledge of the gospel than their modern descendants, for whom disused chapels are repeatedly turned into second homes and their churches to museums.
And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. John 1:5
