St Matthew’s Church, Edgeley

St Matthew’s Church near Stockport (‘Edgeley and Cheadleheath’) is a typical-looking mid-Victorian affair with large spire and somewhat blackened walls. I was unable to get too close on account of walls and locked gates, as well as some bold signage urging readers not to trespass or play ball games, presumably addressing particular problems previously suffered.

Despite this, its website is particularly helpful, and not just about its history and architecture, but about people actualy seeking Christ. Parts of its ‘Vision’ statement, which is something I normally dismiss as corporate nonsense, I thought rather daring. The congregation of St Matthew’s are to consider themselves to be-

'Unapologetic evangelists not apologetic believers'

This boldness, I salute. British Christians, unlike British Muslims, lack confidence and seem to be embarrassed about their faith, as the gap between the Bible’s teachings and worldly values daily widen. Whereas we must present the gospel of Jesus Christ in an effective and sensitive manner, may we never be ashamed of its content and message. The godless, fallen world has always despised it and rejected it, but in our own time, it does so brazenly.
