Understanding John Wesley

It was our pleasure to host Roger Fay last Thursday evening who gave us a talk about the work of providence in the conversion of John Wesley in 1738. This included a number of details usually overlooked in a single session, such as his relationships to certain women in Georgia and the nocturnal goings-on of Old Jeffrey at Epworth Rectory. Upon departure, our speaker discreetly and kindly gave us a copy of his new book Understanding John Wesley: Reassessing His Faith, Theology and Legacy (Christian Focus, 2026) which may be purchased here. Based upon that talk, I look forward to reading it, and will gladly lend our copy to any who ask, though I am sure that buying one’s own will prove more satisfying.

John Wesley is not Jesus Christ, and this book is not scripture. From examining the ancients and heeding past generations of believers, however, we learn from their triumphs and mistakes, assessing their example, and profiting much.

Great men are not always wise: neither do the aged understand judgment. Job 32:9
