Young Swallows of Martin Top

Like an old man who is wont to repeat himself, there is increasing danger that I write the same things over and over on this site. I was going to compose a piece called Swallows of Martin Top, but I beat myself to it back in 2021. What I might still be able to add is that this year’s feathered African migrants must now be on their third brood of the summer.

I suspect that swallows have nested in the eaves and overhangs of Salem Chapel for two centuries now, and consider it a rather convivial home to raise their young. During our prayer meetings, those less focussed on Almighty God may see them swooping past the windows and may hear their young excitedly chattering as fresh food is carefully delivered. Although their breeding habits may cause some inconvenience to those who live in the immediate vicinity, their presence is good news for all of us. The sight and sound of them are always uplifting, but one may also see them flying low about the fields as they search for insects and flies to take back. But for their feeding habits and their young’s great appetites, we would have more creepy crawlies and things buzzing in our ears.

The presence of Christians in any nation is a great blessing to all others, even though few would perceive this or agree even if they did. The people of God spread goodness, truth and liget to the communities in which they live and work. A country without Christians is darker, wickeder, and riper for judgement.

Open the gates, that the righteous nation which keeps the truth may enter in. Isaiah 26:2
